A Brief Homily

Today’s readings invite us to reflect on two important aspects of our relationship with God: our role as stewards of His creation and the importance of inner purity.

In the first reading (Genesis 2:4-9, 15-17), we see the beauty of God’s creation. God creates man and places him in the Garden of Eden to care for it. This reminds us that we are not owners of the world but caretakers. God entrusts us with His creation, expecting us to be responsible and respectful towards the environment, our bodies, and all life. Just as Adam was called to care for the garden, we are called to take care of our homes, communities, and even our souls.

However, caring for creation is not enough if our hearts are impure. That is what Jesus emphasizes in the Gospel (Mark 7:14-23). The Pharisees were overly concerned with external rituals—what people ate, how they washed, and outward cleanliness. But Jesus makes it clear: it is not what enters a person that defiles them, but what comes from the heart. Sin begins inside us, in our thoughts and desires, before it shows in our actions. Greed, pride, jealousy, and hatred are what make a person spiritually unclean.

This teaching is crucial in our modern world. Many people focus on appearances—dressing well, following traditions, or having a good reputation—while their hearts may be filled with anger, dishonesty, or selfishness. Jesus calls us to deeper holiness, a holiness that starts from within. He wants us to cleanse our hearts, not just our hands.

As we reflect on this, we should ask ourselves:

  • Are we taking care of God’s creation, including our environment, family, and souls?
  • Are we focusing more on outward appearances than inner righteousness?
  • What is in our hearts—love, forgiveness, and humility, or anger, jealousy, and pride?

Today, let us pray for the grace to purify our hearts and live as faithful stewards of God’s gifts. May we not only take care of what is visible but also nurture a heart that is pleasing to the Lord.

Inspiration Message
  1. God Made Us Stewards – Take care of the world around you, knowing that creation is a gift from God.
  2. Guard Your Heart – True holiness comes from within; avoid anger, jealousy, and selfishness.
  3. Choose Goodness – Every thought, word, and action should reflect God’s love and truth.
  4. Rely on God’s Wisdom – Seek God’s guidance in decisions, just as Adam was given wisdom to care for the garden.
  5. Live a Life of Gratitude – Bless the Lord always and recognize His presence in your daily life.
